Wednesday, 18th May 2022 is an unforgettable day for people of Bichi town in Kano state (northwest Nigeria) particularly Idris Umar that witnessed his three friends drown in Karaye dam
25 year old Musa Abubakar, 23 year old Isyaku Bashir and 19 year old Nazifi Ibrahim all lost their lives as they went to Kaye dam to bath around 11:00am.
Idris said him and other friends traveled from Bichi to Karaye town on Tuesday for ‘Majlisi’ which in Hausa meansgroup of people coming together to praise prophet Muhammad with hope of getting reward in the hereafter.
“The people of Karaye town invite us for the event and normally we supposed to go back to Bichi same day but as they pleaded with us ,we added some hours and as it was late we decided to spend the night in Karaye.”
“In the morning, the people delayed to bring bath water for us so one of us advised to go bath in the dam”.
“Some of us were not comfortable with the idea but Musa (among the people that died) jokingly said we are scared for nothing .so we aggreed.
Idris go on to explain what happened after they got to the dam and how the three friends all die within minutes.
“The dam is divided into two parts,we avoided the bigger part-and went to the part the water is small .in fact we even met some small children bathing as well
“Isyaku first jump into the water before Nazifi join but the 4 of us standing outside noticed that after the two jumped in we did not see their face that’s why Musa decided in and help them.
“As Musa jumped none of them came out then we concluded that something bad have happened to them , because none came out, so we started shouting for help
“Unfortunately no help came in time because after 10 minutes about 20 people jumped in to help but only came out with lifeless bodies.”
The Father of Musa that died said he will ever forget the final moments with his son before the group of friends embarked on the trip of no return.
